Transforming the Industry in Ghana
The Eastern Region of Ghana has a serene landscape that is characterized by lush oil palm plantations. Known as a major hub for palm oil production in Africa, Ghana's sector significantly contributes to rural livelihoods and economic development. Within this vibrant industry, artisanal and small-scale producers form the backbone, accounting for 60-80% of the nation’s palm oil production. Yet, the traditional methods they rely on pose serious environmental and health challenges.
The Challenges of Traditional Processing
Artisanal producers typically use rudimentary metal pots, relying on open fires fueled by car tires, fiber, bamboo, and firewood to process palm oil. This method generates excessive smoke and environmental pollutants, adversely affecting air quality and the health of workers. The smoke is detrimental to the eyes and respiratory health of workers exposed to thick plumes of smoke.
These inefficient processes also contribute to water pollution and poor waste management, compounding environmental concerns. The reliance on low-efficiency machinery leads to lengthy processing times and lower-quality oil, which fails to meet the standards required by refineries. Consequently, despite Ghana’s growing production capacity, the country remains a net importer of palm oil, with imports far outweighing exports.
Technological Solutions
Recognizing these challenges, we have made significant efforts towards modernizing the palm oil production process. Notably, our site uses new energy-efficient technologies, including the use of mechanized threshing, pressing, and boiling without the use of any of the harmful sources of energy. The machinery substantially cuts workload while also ensuring that the delicate manual process of cleaning fruits prior to pressing is also maintained.

Transformations like ours would not have been possible without robust collaboration among the government, private sector, and NGOs such as Solidaridad West Africa, AND RSPO(Roundtable on Sustainable Palm Oil). These stakeholders have championed the cause of sustainable palm oil production, improving energy efficiency, public health, and environmental protection.
Such partnerships are important for managing climate risks and fostering sustainable industrial growth.

Through scaling up effective solutions, Ghana’s artisanal and small-scale palm oil producers like ours are transitioning from carbon-intensive practices to cleaner, more sustainable operations. The lessons learned here show the importance of public-private partnerships in unlocking investments and advancing climate technologies. As these pioneering efforts take root, they pave the way for a healthier environment and a brighter economic future for all .
